What Is PFAS and Why Should You Care?
You have probably seen the phrase "forever chemicals" in news coverage about water contamination or cookware safety. It refers to PFAS — a large family of synthetic compounds that share one defining characteristic: they do not break down. Not in the soil, not in rivers, not in your bloodstream. Once they enter an environment, they stay.
Understanding what PFAS are and how they behave helps you make sense of the coverage, evaluate the actual risk, and decide which product changes are genuinely worth making. The short answer
PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) are a family of over 10,000 synthetic chemicals built around an extremely strong carbon-fluorine bond. This bond makes them heat-resistant, water-repellent, and chemically stable — properties that made them commercially useful in hundreds of product categories. The same stability means they persist indefinitely in the environment and accumulate in human tissue. The most-studied variants have been phased out internationally, but thousands of related compounds remain in use. At high occupational exposure levels, research has found associations with thyroid disruption, immune changes, and certain cancers. At typical consumer levels the evidence is less certain, and a precautionary approach to high-exposure products is the current regulatory position.
Why this happens
The carbon-fluorine bond is one of the strongest in organic chemistry — stronger than the bonds found in most naturally occurring compounds. Biological enzymes that break down other organic molecules have no effective mechanism for breaking this bond. Neither do sunlight, heat, or common environmental processes. This is why PFAS persist: there is no natural degradation pathway.
When PFAS enter your body — through food, water, inhalation of dust, or skin contact — some are filtered and excreted relatively quickly. Others, particularly the longer-chain variants, bind to proteins in blood and accumulate in organs including the liver and kidneys. Some have a biological half-life measured in years, meaning the body eliminates half of the amount present every three to eight years, depending on the specific compound.
This accumulation means that ongoing low-level exposure from multiple sources adds up over time. A person cooking daily on a degraded non-stick pan, eating food from PFAS-coated packaging, and wearing a PFAS-treated rain jacket is receiving exposure from several sources simultaneously. What to look for
No single label tells you a product is free of all PFAS. Here is what the common claims actually mean:
- PFOA-free: One specific long-chain compound (perfluorooctanoic acid) has been removed. It does not mean the product is PFAS-free — PFOA has often been replaced with shorter-chain PFAS or related compounds.
- PTFE-free: Free of polytetrafluoroethylene, the most common non-stick coating. More meaningful than PFOA-free for cookware.
- PFC-free / PFAS-free: Broader claim covering the whole chemical family. More meaningful, but currently hard to verify independently without third-party certification.
- bluesign certified: A textile certification that restricts a range of harmful chemicals including PFAS-based DWR finishes.
- OEKO-TEX Standard 100: Tests finished textiles for a range of harmful substances, including some PFAS variants.

What to do
The goal is not to eliminate all PFAS exposure — that is not currently possible. It is to reduce high-frequency, high-temperature exposure from the most significant sources.
