PFAS in Carpets and Flooring: The Stain-Resistant Coating Problem
PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) — the same family of forever chemicals found in non-stick cookware, food packaging, and water-repellent clothing — are used extensively in household furnishings. Carpets and rugs are among the most significant household PFAS sources, yet they rarely feature in PFAS discussions focused on kitchen and clothing.
The short answer
PFAS-based chemistry has been the standard for carpet stain resistance for decades. Products marketed under the Scotchgard brand (3M) and similar treatments from other manufacturers use PFAS compounds to repel liquids and resist staining. These compounds off-gas into indoor air and accumulate in household dust. They are detected in the blood of most people who have had carpeted homes. When replacing flooring, choosing untreated wool carpet, natural fibre rugs, hardwood, cork, or tile eliminates this exposure source. How PFAS get into carpets
Carpet stain resistance works by coating individual fibres with a substance that causes liquids to bead and roll off rather than absorb. PFAS compounds are effective for this purpose because of their extreme chemical stability and their ability to repel both water and oil — a rare combination in chemistry. The treatment is typically applied at the manufacturing stage, either as a spray or bath, before the carpet leaves the factory.
The PFAS compounds used historically include perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) — both now restricted internationally. Current treatments use shorter-chain PFAS compounds marketed as safer alternatives, though the science on these is still emerging and several jurisdictions are moving toward broad PFAS restrictions rather than compound-by-compound phase-outs.
The dust pathway
PFAS do not remain permanently bonded to carpet fibres. Over time, through foot traffic, vacuuming, and normal wear, treated carpet fibres break down and release particles into household dust. PFAS also slowly volatilise into indoor air at room temperature, particularly in warmer conditions.
Household dust is a significant exposure pathway for PFAS — studies have found PFAS concentrations in household dust correlating with carpet coverage in homes. The exposure route is primarily ingestion of dust (hand-to-mouth contact) and inhalation. Young children, who spend more time on floors and have more hand-to-mouth contact than adults, are the highest-risk group.
Upholstery treatments
The same PFAS-based stain and water-resistance treatments applied to carpets are also used on upholstered furniture fabric. Sofas, armchairs, and dining chairs marketed as "stain-resistant" or "easy-clean" typically use these treatments. When combined with polyurethane foam that may contain flame retardants (see Flame Retardants in Furniture), this makes conventional upholstered furniture one of the highest-PFAS household items.
Flooring alternatives without PFAS
- Untreated wool carpet: Wool is naturally resistant to staining and soil due to the lanolin content of the fibre. It does not require PFAS treatment to function well. Look for wool carpet explicitly labelled as untreated with stain-resistance chemicals.
- Natural fibre rugs (jute, sisal, coir, seagrass): Plant-fibre rugs are not treated with PFAS. They are not as soft underfoot as wool or synthetic carpet but have low chemical concern profiles.
- Hardwood flooring (sealed with water-based polyurethane): No PFAS, low ongoing VOC emissions once cured, durable. Avoid oil-based finishes (higher VOC) and wax finishes with synthetic additives.
- Cork flooring: Natural, soft underfoot, no PFAS treatment required. Good thermal and acoustic insulation. Check adhesive VOC content if glue-down installation.
- Ceramic or porcelain tile: No PFAS, completely inert, easy to clean, long-lasting. Cold and hard underfoot — consider natural fibre rugs on top.
- Avoid: Vinyl/LVT (PVC) flooring — while not typically PFAS-treated, vinyl off-gases plasticisers including phthalates, particularly in warm rooms.
Managing existing PFAS-treated carpet
If you have existing PFAS-treated carpet and cannot replace it immediately:
- Vacuum frequently with a HEPA filter vacuum. This reduces the dust load that accumulates. A HEPA filter captures the fine particles rather than redistributing them in exhaust air.
- Remove shoes at the door. Outdoor soil tracked inside adheres to carpet fibres and increases total dust burden.
- Ventilate regularly. Open windows daily to reduce VOC concentrations from off-gassing.
- Consider air purification in heavily carpeted rooms. A HEPA + activated carbon unit reduces both particle and VOC concentrations from carpet off-gassing. See Air Purifiers and Indoor Air Quality.
- Prioritise replacement in the bedroom — where children sleep on the floor during night wakings, where babies learn to crawl, and where total daily exposure hours are highest.
